Is Spring Break worth the hype?
Spring Break, the moment many students have been waiting for their entire college careers. That moment when you finally get to escape the depressing libraries and bitter winter to head somewhere warm and toasty. Your midterms have finally come to the end you’ve been waiting for, and you’re ready to go. No parents, no school, no responsibility. Only a few days separate you and your friends from soaking up the UV rays in Mexico, but there’s still miles of preparations.
You think you have months to start dieting and working out every day, but the next thing you know your trip is one month away, and you’re in total winter hibernation mode. So, you panic and try to convince yourself the dieting and exercise you just starting doing three days ago has already made a miraculous difference. But then you somehow find yourself in the McDonald’s drive through ordering a #6 10-piece chicken nugget meal with a medium fry and large Coke.
Next, you realize all of your summer clothes are “totally last year” and now are forced to order an entire new wardrobe for this five-day trip. You end up spending another $300 dollars on top of the $1,500 you’ve already spent on the vacation. Now, you start thinking “is it really worth it?”.
Now you’re starting to forget why you’re even going on this trip in the first place. You start thinking it’s going to be like when you see a trailer for a new movie that looks so amazing that you get way too excited to see it; Then the inevitable happens and you’re ultimately disappointed by the movie. You start to reconsider the trip, nervous that it’s not going to live up to your expectations. You consult your friends, ask for their opinions, and try to make a decision. You then remember, this is the trip you’ve been waiting to go on for years.
So, now it’s time to get over the dieting and the clothes and focus on your trip with your friends. You start thinking to yourself, “how often in your life will you get to go to a foreign country with your friends, and sit on the beach for five days?”.
To many people, Spring Break is considered a rite of passage; You have to do it at least once and when you do it, you have to live it up as best as you can. This is the time to do things you never thought you would get the chance to do, so make the best out of it.
Spring Break is one of the experiences you truly only have when you are in college. College is only four years long, so if you want to go on a trip that you’re not sure if it’s really worth it- just try it.
