Hosting a painting party for your kids and their friends during a global pandemic is not my idea of a good time. Under normal circumstances, it’s a great opportunity to get a little messy, stir up the creative juices, and entertain but these days, it sounds like a logistical nightmare. While painting parties are a fun social activity that adults have enjoyed for the last few years (a la Paint ’n’ Sip wine nights), planning a similar kid’s friendly party at home is a piece of cake when you have the right tools and support. Let’s look at do it yourself option and one with a little help.
Do it Yourself Party
If you’re doing it yourself, you will need the following material. Gather a few materials in advance of your party:
- fresh paints (choose washable options for kids)- best is acrylics.
- paper plates for paint
- new paintbrushes
- canvases (high-quality paper that can be framed is good too, but I can attest that there’s a magical ‘big kid’ appeal when you give a child the opportunity to create on a real canvas)
- water (for cleaning brushes)
- paper towels for cleanup
- easels
Paint palettes can be found at many craft and supply stores (both the classic wooden oval variety and plastic palettes with divided wells), but if you want an even more cost-effective option, use paper plates. For added appeal, use a utility knife to cut a circle as a thumb hole in your palette.
Help from the Pros
If you want to make it easy for yourself, try out my favorite streaming art classes: Paint and Sip LIVE. The virtual entertainment startup offers kids private parties with a real instructor and a live DJ. How fun is that? For $49 per kid (a minimum of ten kids is required), they supply all of the material that you will need, connect with you on Zoom, and if you don’t know-how, will show you, and a live DJ that will play age-appropriate music. The instructors and the DJ really engage with the kids and get them bopping to the music while creating art. It’s clean fun for the kids and the whole family. For the adults, they offer all kinds of live events, just check out their events page.

Helpful tips:
- Sketch with pencil first! This will help kids plan and execute their vision.
- Keep a hairdryer in the room. Blast the artwork periodically to help expedite the paint dry time so that colors can be layered without smudging together.
- Be sure each child puts their name on their finished art – either on the wooden frame on which the canvas is attached or in the lower corner on the front.
At the end of the party, make some beautiful memories and don’t forget to take a photo with all of the kids standing together, displaying their artwork.

Q-Tip Painting
Q-Tip painting is fun and relaxing and allows kids to work on their fine motor skills. It is a good painting project for kids five years and older. You can find free printable templates online that you can print out. You can then take a Q-tip, dip it into whatever color you want to use and then place colored paint dots around the printable. You can also do the same with coloring book pages, or the kids can create their own unique masterpiece on a plain piece of paper.
Have fun!
