When you meditate, do you ever contemplate whether or not it is actually working? If yes, then you have landed on the right page. So often, mindfulness practices like vipassana meditation can feel like you are just sitting there going through your to-do list or thinking about the process of deep meditation itself, leading the time to stretch more. Certainly, you might be experiencing meditation deeply, even if you simply don’t realize it. Like falling asleep, the transition into deep mindfulness can be subtle and soothing.

You forgot to feel the moment. 

Have you been thinking about the fact that you were practicing med the entire time, then you weren’t really deep in it. Normally, a deep mindfulness session implies a little too heavy that involves losing awareness of the moment you meditate. Truthfully, this is where this practice seems more challenging. Individuals who have tried to make themselves go to bed at night by stressing more about how they cannot sleep usually keep themselves up for long hours. Rather than this, sleep experts suggest keeping the mind preoccupied with other things like counting backward, visualizing/counting sheep, or reading a novel. Now, this is why conventionally, various mindfulness techniques were used, like breath awareness, to lure the mind away from consciousness subtly. That is why you forget the fact that you are meditating at all. 

You encounter time lapses.

Another major indicator that you are deep into meditation is when you ultimately observe more time passed than what you held for. In simple words, you meditated for 20-25 minutes, but it only felt like 10-15 minutes. For individuals unaccounted for those 10-15 minutes, you don’t recall thinking much of anything else. 

Your body feels relaxed

You will sometimes start mindfulness or something like a vipassana meditation online program while sitting upright with a lifted chin and erect spine. Still, you come out of it with your back slightly bent, and chin dipped forward. If this has happened in your mediation case, then there’s nothing to worry about. Generally, you had an exceedingly blissful experience that you probably didn’t notice after coming out. After all, it is not uncommon for meditating individuals to drool from time to time in such deep states. 

You got lost in your notions

Another familiar sign of deep meditation is when you experience a transition from surface awareness to fine-drawn awareness, and eventually, to no awareness. As your brain passes through the multiple degrees of awareness, you will be assuming different ideas or notions; many of which will not have anything to do with you. Keep in mind that if you resist your thoughts, you may re-enliven your mind. Unreasonably, if you embrace your ideas or thoughts, your mind will continue to be de-enliven. As a result, you may lose all your awareness, which is symbolic of the deepest states of vipassana or any other meditation form. 

You experienced shallow breathing movements. 

Taking a deep knock off of air while practicing mediation is a side effect of deep rest. The body’s breathing level correlates with the amount of rest obtained during a shared experience. While running or jogging, your breathing rate will be heavy. While reading a book or sitting idle, your breathing rate will be immensely lower. And while taking a nap, it certainly drops even more. Assuming vipassana meditation or any other mindfulness practice, your breathing rate slows down considerably. If you encounter the same, your practice is going as it was meant to be.
