King Charles has been officially crowned in a lavish coronation ceremony at London’s Westminster Abbey. It was the first event of its kind in the UK in 70 years .

Chants of “God Save the King” could be heard inside and outside Westminster Abbey shortly after King Charles was crowned.

The moment is celebrated across the UK with the firing of cannons and the tolling of Westminster Abbey’s bell for two minutes . Thousands of people thronged the wide avenue between Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square to join the festivities .

However, anti-monarchy protests have also been seen during the event. At least six protesters were detained by the police.

About 11,500 members of the Metropolitan Police were deployed on the day of the event.
