King Charles has been officially crowned in a lavish coronation ceremony at London’s Westminster Abbey. It was the first event of its kind in the UK in 70 years .
Chants of “God Save the King” could be heard inside and outside Westminster Abbey shortly after King Charles was crowned.
The moment is celebrated across the UK with the firing of cannons and the tolling of Westminster Abbey’s bell for two minutes . Thousands of people thronged the wide avenue between Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square to join the festivities .
King Charles took the oath wearing his grandfather’s red velvet robes, then was anointed with holy oil before being anointed with the ‘crown’ of St Edward on his head.
Shortly after the coronation of King Charles, his wife Camilla became Queen. Queen Consort Camilla was crowned by Queen Mary with a simple ceremony. He took no oath.
